The federation has signed up for membership and is currently talking with both organisations about the structure of its involvement.
"We have done a lot of work around responsible sourcing and the role of certification is increasing, so our membership of these organisations will give the federation an inside track in this area and an industry voice," said David Hopkins, head of external affairs.
"Now we have to look at how we will integrate what we do and the role we will play so that we are all moving in the same direction."
TTF chief executive John White said the move would formalise the close links between the organisations. "We have been asked in the past to join, which we tended to resist because in those days of lots of schemes we did not want to pick and choose. Now there are effectively only two in the world."
The TTF is already involved with the FSC’s Online Claims platform to develop speedy verification by providing feedback from TTF members. It also recently took part in an FSC International discussion on increasing certification of tropical forests.
The TTF is involved with PEFC by working to have its Responsible Purchasing Policy tool informally recognised by PEFC chain of custody auditors.
