Two designs took joint first prize in a “wood on the street” competition for architectural students organised by wood. for good and the Royal Institute of British Architects.
Entrants were asked to design one or more buildings or structures using timber to fit into the mixed use development at Gabriels’ Wharf in London.
Entries were received from the UK and Europe and responses varied from timber framed buildings to a sunken courtyard, public open spaces and a swimming pool.
The judges said the two winning schemes “stood head and shoulders above the rest”.
They are an “inhabited bridge” designed by Eddie Wainwright of the Welsh School of Architecture and a “swimming pool” designed by Lucy Evans and Tom Holberton at the Bartlett School.
The bridge would be constructed as a glulam timber truss and would accommodate new places to live, shop, work, eat and relax.
The swimming pool building design uses a woven glulam timber structure and filigree leg supports. The design incorporates a varnished curved floor and louvered walls to emphasise varying light conditions.
