The UK imported US$93m of hardwood lumber from the US during 2000, an increase of 6% on the previous year.
The figures, released by the American Hardwood Export Council, show the UK was the number four destination for US wood products in the world and number five for hardwood lumber.
The imports represented 18% of the total EU import. In contrast, the UK accounted for only 3% of the European Union‘s import of American hardwood logs, marking it as a true added value market.
In terms of species, the UK was the second largest market for American ash, third for white oak and fourth for cherry.
The average US hardwood price paid by the UK market in 2000 was $735m³.
