UK sawmillers processed a total of 7.2million m3 of British roundwood timber (underbark) during 2001, according to the Forestry Commission‘s newly-published Forestry Facts & Figures.
The figure, a slight increase on 2000, contrasts with the level of wood products imported into the UK last year – equivalent to 50million m3 of timber underbark.
The estimated woodland area in the UK at March 31 2002 is 2.71million hectares, comprising 1.32million hectares in Scotland; 1.1million hectares in England; and 288,000h in Wales.
More than 13,000h of new woodland was created, while managements grants were paid for more than 44,000h under the Woodland Grant Scheme.
