Fire risks posed during the construction of timber framed buildings have been brought to the fore in the past 12 months, with the Colindale blaze the focal point of many discussions on the subject and other industries, including the precast flooring sector, using the issue to deride timber frame constructions.

David Berry, who has 40 years’ experience as a fire engineer, will now offer the UKTFA and its members advice on best practice techniques and the latest technologies to reduce the risk of on-site fires.

“We are taking the lead, helping our clients to get a strong grip on construction, design and maintenance (CDM), good site management and good site security,” said UKTFA chairman Stewart Dalgarno. “David’s appointment will play an important part in helping the UKTFA to promote best practice, especially the latest methods of reducing fire risk through improved site practice and the use of passive fire protection techniques.”

Mr Berry is also set to help the UKTFA deliver a £120,000 fire safety project that is designed to develop fire protection systems and help housebuilders comply with CDM regulations.
