The council decided against renewing a timber export ban on Liberia after a planned review of its earlier decision to lift the embargo.

Liberia’s government passed legislation within a UN 90-day deadline which will ensure a transparent, accountable government-controlled forestry sector.

“This important forestry legislation will ensure that revenues from the timber industry will not again fuel conflict,” said the council.

The council, which also praised the Liberia Forest Initiative, called on the Liberian government to implement and enforce the new legislation.
