United Sawmills has decided to close its ailing Kuopio sawmill because of its continued unprofitability.
Talks with employees aimed at finding a future for the Finnish mill have failed to find a solution and management has decided to stop production on the site by the end of March.
Kuopio’s entire workforce of 80 will be given notice but there are thought to be more than 200 jobs available at UPM-Kymmene Wood Products Divison’s mills at other locations next year.
News of the closure follows reports that United Sawmills’ Kajaani mill also faces closure. Some 30 workers will lose their jobs if the mill closes.
Earlier this month United Sawmills sold its Lapua mill to Visuvesi Sawmills for an undisclosed sum.
Lapua produces around 80,000m³ of spruce and pine sawn goods a year and employs 48 people.
