UPM-Kymmene claims to be the first European plywood manufacturer to start CE marking its products.
The first CE marked plywood was sent from the company’s Pellos mill to a Danish customer during July. All of UPM-Kymmene’s plywood mills will be able to CE mark their products by the end of September.
Timo Heikkilä, vice-president (marketing) at UPM’s plywood subsidiary Schauman Wood, said: “For consumers, the CE mark on their plywood communicates reliability. It means the product has been tested and the results reported according to the guidelines of the pan-European harmonised product standard and that it complies with essential safety and health requirements in the Construction Products Directive.”
CE marking is designed to remove technical barriers to trade caused by divergent national standards relating to building materials. The mark will become compulsory from April 2004.
