More than 3,000 UPM workers staged a 24-hour strike to protest against the company’s plans to lay off 670 staff and close several plants.
The action followed a UPM announcement confirming its decision to go ahead with the layoffs and closure of two plywood plants and a sawmill in Finland.
Up to 7,500 of the company’s paper workers have planned a similar strike in support of their colleagues.
