American hardwoods featured in two of the winning entries at The Furniture Awards 2004 held in Birmingham on January 20.

The American Hardwood Export Council sponsored the Young Designer of the Year award and European director David Venables presented the first prize to Russell Lee from DeMontford University.

Mr Lee’s design of a multi-functional sofa with storage space and working surfaces used American black walnut. As well as a cheque for £500, Mr Lee won a three-month placement with design studio Volume Design.

American white oak was used by John Kelly Furniture, winner of the bedroom furniture category with the Zeta Bed, described as “very collectable” by the judges.
