Ketchum in Idaho, a hideaway for the rich and famous, is one of the latest towns to implement a ban on cutting mature trees on private land. The town’s tree cover has fallen by about 40% since 1993.

It decided to introduce a ban after a developer announced plans to fell three large spruces on his property. The trees were felled in the hours before the ban came into effect.

Neighbouring town Hailey implemented a similar ban after five century-old conifers were chopped down.
