Millions of North American native ash seeds are being collected for freezing in the latest move to tackle the spread of the emerald ash borer beetle.

The bug has so far spread to 13 US states, killing up to 70 million trees.

The native ash is one of the most valuable species for the American timber industry, with the US Department of Agriculture estimating annual output from the country’s eastern lumber sector at 114 million bd ft.
