Finnish power plant supplier Wärtsilä says it has broken into the Swedish biofuel market with a contract to supply a facility for publicly-owned heat and power utility Marks Värme AB.
Tord Johnsson, Wärtsila’s power plant manager, said: “This order marks an important breakthrough for us in Sweden, where electricity generation regulations emphasise the use of renewable fuels such as wood chips, bark and sawdust. We solidly believe that following this first delivery more such bioplants will be built in Sweden in the future.”
Wärtsilä will build the BioPower5 DH plant beside an existing power plant in Skene. It will generate 3.5Mw of electricity and 16Mw of heat, with sawmill bark and sawdust being used for fuel.
Both plants will supply district heat to 800 customers, while electricity production is enough for 2,500 detached homes.
