Up to £50,000 in grant money to increase the use of recycled material is up for grabs for Welsh manufacturers using wood as a raw material.

A new scheme operated by the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) in Wales launches on September 6.

WRAP said only 21% of manufacturers in the wood sector use recycled content in their processes. Its research also found that 78% of SMEs think that direct financial support to help with the initial costs of switching would help them to increase recycled content.

WRAP will award successful applicants funding which can be used either for new production and packaging plants and equipment or to adapt existing equipment to facilitate the use of recycled materials.

The scheme can also fund any additional promotional costs to relaunch a product with its improved level of recycled content.

“This type of grant is a first for Wales, and for WRAP,” said Peter Webster, WRAP Cymru’s market development manager.

Applications are welcome until December 2010, with funding available on a “first come, first served” basis.
