A state government decision to cut jarrah and karri yields has angered western Australia’s timber community which says the industry is on the brink of collapse.
The government has decided 131,000m3 of jarrah and 54,000m3 of karri will be available for logging under the forest management plan – but industry groups say anything less than 165,000m3 is unsustainable. The decision also means the state will miss out on A$15m in Commonwealth funding under the Regional Forest Agreement.
