Weyerhaeuser is backing a British Columbia government plan aimed at solving the softwood lumber stand-off between the US and Canada.
Chairman and chief executive officer of Weyerhaeuser Steven Rogel applauded provincial forests minister Mike de Jong’s proposal to replace US import duties averaging 27% with a border tax until Canada changes its forestry policies.
Mr de Jong made the proposal for a sliding scale of taxes to the US Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports, a lobby group which believes Canada is effectively subsidising its lumber industry.
Weyerhaeuser, which has 18 softwood mills in Canada, also wants to see a temporary suspension of litigation between the two sides to help negotiations for a long-term solution.
