The Carrot river sawmill and Hudson Bay plywood mill, both in Saskatchewan, will close on January 3 next year. Amost 300 employees are affected, 183 at Hudson Bay and 116 at Carrot River.

“This announcement is to balance our production to our orders and is not based on the performance of the employees at Carrot River and Hudson Bay,” said Fred Rowson, Weyerhaeuser area manager for softwood lumber.

“Over the past months and years they have worked diligently to respond to each new challenge and to improve their performance. Unfortunately, the factors forcing the indefinite curtailment of operations at the mills are beyond their control,” said Mr Rowson.

Hudson Bay produces softwood plywood for use in residential construction, while Carrot River’s softwood lumber studs are also used for housing.
