Weyerhaeuser claims it is continuing to strengthen its environmental credentials.

It has just released a 96-page annual report “Roadmap for Sustainability” in which it says it has reduced waste going to landfill by 45% since 1999 and cut energy consumption by 27%.

Since 1996, wood product facilities have reduced air emissions of carbon monoxide by 71%, volatile organic compounds by 59% and particulate matter by 67%. A total of 111 million trees were planted in 2004, while virtually every portion of logs brought into mills is now used.

During 2004 the company was a net storer of carbon, sequestering more than 3.5 times the amount of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, it emitted from the use of fossil fuel.

Chairman, president and chief executive officer Steven Rogel said: “Over the past decade, Weyerhaeuser has significantly improved its environmental performance and reduced its environmental footprint.”
