Wijma Douala SARL has had its Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certificate for concessions in Cameroon reinstated after undertaking a series of operational improvements.

Wijma, the Cameroon subsidiary of Koninklijke Houthandel G Wijma & Zonen BV in Kampen, the Netherlands, had its FSC certificate suspended in spring 2007 after certification accreditation body Bureau Veritas Certification discovered its forest management policies “turned out not to be at the right level on several points”.

Wijma has overhauled its management protocols and procedures alongside the implementation of a monitoring programme for its operations.

“The reinstatement of this certificate gives us the opportunity to continue the FSC-certification process of yet another forest concession,” said Wijma Group chief executive officer Jami Goud.

Wijma Douala received the FSC certificate in December 2005, with Maarten Wijma, then chief executive officer of the Wijma Group, saying it proved that “responsible forest management in West Africa is possible”.
