The Woodworking Industry Training Forum (WITForum) has unveiled plans to tackle training needs in the sector, including efforts to address an ageing workforce.
The WITForum will continue management and supervisory training, health and safety workshops, as well as expanding the estimating course piloted in Sheffield at the end of 2008. It has also secured funding for members to gain ISO 9001 and chain of custody certification and undertake health and safety audits.
WITForum manager Dave Campbell said a main priority was to help members access existing training funding. A recent WITForum survey showed members were not aware of funding available.
“I will also be looking to improve the quality of industry NVQs and to encourage school leavers to consider a career in the woodworking industry, something which is vital to secure the future of the industry,” he said.
The survey found that an ageing workforce was a major concern for joinery companies, with fewer 16-19 year-olds entering the industry compared to 2007. School leavers are being encouraged to apply to university rather than consider a “hands-on” career in the woodworking sector.
However, a 5% rise was seen in the number of employees qualified to NVQ3 and above.
The WITForum has more than 500 members and is supported by a ConstructionSkills grant.
