Wood Awards 2020 shortlist revealed

Seventeen structures and nine product designs have been nominated for the Wood Awards 2020 shortlist.

The Wood Awards is the UK’s premier competition for excellence in architecture and product design in wood, aiming to encourage and promote outstanding timber design, craftsmanship and installation.

The Awards are split into two main categories: Buildings and Furniture & Product. Among the shortlisted projects in the Buildings category include the National Automotive Innovation Centre in Coventry featuring cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glulam.

Others include The Handlebar Cafe, Winchester, featuring Accoya, softwood and oak-faced ply, while the Harris Academy, Sutton, has CLT, glulam and Douglas fir cladding.

The independent judging panel visits all the shortlisted projects in person and an online exhibition of the shortlist was launched today (September 14) during the London Design Festival.

The buildings judging panel is led by three-time Gold Award winner Stephen Corbett of Green Oak Carpentry. The panel includes Andrew Lawrence, Arup; Kirsten Haggart, Waugh Thistleton Architects; Nathan Wheatley, engenuiti; David Morley, David Morley Architects; Jim Greaves, Hopkins; and architectural journalist Ruth Slavid.

Major Sponsors are the American Hardwood Export Council and Carpenters' Company. Other Sponsors include American Softwoods, Timber Trade Federation and TRADA.
