Timber industry promotional campaign wood. for good has urged companies to take advantage of the opportunities afforded by the government’s proposed Code for Sustainable Homes.

Wood. for good is the second major timber industry group to welcome the draft code, which specifically includes timber as a means of securing eco construction points, after the British Woodworking Federation hailed the document as a huge boost for the timber and joinery industries.

Wood. for good Charles Trevor said the government had recognised the timber industry’s hard work of proving the sustainability of wood through chain of custody certification systems.

He said: “It is expected that the code for sustainable homes will offer a significant opportunity for sustainably sourced timber within the UK. It’s down to the timber industry to take advantage of this opportunity.”

wood. for good says timber can gain additional points in the code, the subject of public consultation until March 6, where materials would gain an A rating from BRE‘s Green Guide to Housing. This includes sustainable timber used in roofing (batons), external walls (cladding and timber frame), internals walls (cladding), floors, windows, external surfacing (decking) and boundary protection (fencing).

Additional code points can be secured based on the percentage of certified timber and wood products and/or recycled/reused elements in a development, where subject to full third-party chain of custody.

wood. for good said the voluntary code, which features five performance levels from a basic entry level to an aspirational “five star” development, would also reward use of sustainable timber as insulation to improve thermal resistance, plus responsible wood sourcing to cut down on site waste.
