Businesses across the country are converting to woodfuel, according to new research.

Forestry Commission Scotland said its report into woodfuel use published this week shows that wood is proving popular with small to medium-sized businesses and community heat projects.

The report says more than 1 million green tonnes of woodfuel were used in 2009, with overall demand expected to rise to around 1.3 million green tonnes in 2010.

“The fact that businesses across the country are making the move to woodfuel shows it makes business sense and that confidence in this emerging sector is helping new, local suppliers to make a go of their wood fuel business,” said Scottish environment minister Roseanna Cunningham.

Forestry Commission Scotland has reconvened the Woodfuel Task Force to act on the findings of the study and explore ways of creating the infrastructure that will support and encourage efforts to capitalise on the material.
