The world produced a total of 390.9 million m3 of sawn timber in 2002, according to a fresh publication of statistical data.
The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) Yearbook of Forest Products covering 1998-2002, based on data received from countries worldwide through questionnaires and official publications, also says a total of 388.3 million m3 of sawn timber (softwood and hardwood) was consumed in the world during 2002.
European production was 127.8 million m3, with Russia leading the way (19.2 million m3), followed by Germany (16.8 million m3) and Sweden (16.5 million m3).
Imports into Europe totalled 45.1 million m3 in 2002, worth US$9bn. Exports were 58.9 million m3, valued at US$9.6bn.
