Business Development/Sales Manager – Full time permanent

Salary £35,000 to £40,000 plus commission and car allowance 

WL West & Sons are a family of long-established Saw millers, Timber Merchants and Fencing Contractors, established in 1865. Our main site is Selham, near Petworth, with a fencing division based in Farnham, Surrey.

We have a solid core of loyal live accounts but need more prospecting.

We are located on a 12 acre site with extensive workshops and sawmill. With extensive investment in machinery, this includes a modern sawmill capable of sawing large hardwood logs, linear and CNC machining facility and modern sawing and planning systems.

We need to find new markets and greater diversification. This job requires a creative thinker who can logically work out clear and decisive tested routes to market.

Currently we have a small and loyal sales team who both visit our clients and keep in close contact by telephone. This is supported by a web presence and social media, in addition to advertising through trade bodies and publications. We also have a ‘calling’ clientele of both trade and retail customers, who visit both sites.

We are seeking an experienced, ambitious, outgoing and driven Business Development/Sales Manager who will be primarily responsible for implementing a variety of new business initiatives to increase profitable margin lead revenue.

They should be able to demonstrate planning, developing and achieving sales growth within their previous roles.

Your responsibilities as our Business Development Manager will include but not be limited to:

  • Manage the existing team, encourage, motivate, grow and lead a successful sales force
  • Identify & generate new leads.
  • Develop new product types with an interest in R&D
  • Building, maintaining and enhancing excellent customer relationships to encourage repeat business
  • Manage the end to end sales process and ensure the standards are met
  • Help run the key top accounts in the business

Ideally you will have the following skills/experience:

  • A proven track record within Sales / Business Development.
  • Experience in the Hardwood sector of the timber industry but this is not essential.
  • Excellent Communication skills both face to face and on the phone.
  • Experience of working in a small dedicated team.
  • Confident, reliable and punctual, be self-motivated and enthusiastic with a solid work ethic and a “can do” attitude whilst being a team player who enjoys a busy and productive working environment.
  • Leader of a team to go forward and get the results through others as well as being a ‘big account hunter’ in your own right
