Power Sheds supports UK Men’s Shed Association at Westminster

For one week, Portcullis House at the Palace of Westminster was home to ‘The Parliament Shed’, a temporary men’s shed to highlight the health, well-being and social benefits of community-run men’s sheds.

The Parliament Shed at Portcullis House included a shed from Power Sheds used by the volunteers demonstrating wood working.

“Partnering with the UK Men's Shed Association for 'The Parliament Shed' at the Palace of Westminster is a privilege for Power Sheds,” said Jack Sutcliffe, CEO of Power Sheds. “It's a fantastic charity that embodies the spirit of community, and we're proud to support their mission in promoting men's health and well-being."

In addition, expert partners from Zero Suicide Alliance, Men's Health Forum and the Centre for Ageing Better joined the UKMSA to explain the causes and promote the benefits of their work to MPs. Topics included suicide prevention, mental health, men’s health and loneliness. 

“We’re very grateful for support from Power Sheds to showcase how community projects such as men’s sheds can be transformative for shedders, their families and the wider community,” said Charlie Bethel, chief executive officer, UKMSA.

“Men’s sheds work because they are a simple concept that people can relate to,” he continued. “Whether it is a shed building bird boxes or mending football boots and bikes to give to disadvantaged children in their communities, you can see a real pride and sense of achievement in everyone who comes through the door of a shed. Ninety-six per cent of shedders felt less lonely after joining a men’s shed.”

The Speakers’ Shed was donated by Power Sheds and has been adapted by Black Park Shed in Buckinghamshire for the week-long event in Parliament. Tools, equipment and supplies have been provided by Axminster Tools Ltd, TiteFix and Ronseal.
