On April 28 James Jones sales manager Keith Ainslie lined up on the start line of the 53-mile Highland Fling Ultra race which runs from Milngavie to Tyndrum on the West Highland Way.

He set himself an ambitious target time of 12 hours and was well on the way to this when a knee injury at 30 miles put this in jeopardy. However, he managed to get running again and made the final checkpoint 12 miles from the end, when, he says, “a mixture of running, jogging, walking the hills and animated shuffling” got him over the finish line in 11 hours 45 minutes.

“Undoubtedly the hardest physical challenge I’ve ever undertaken, but I’m delighted I managed a creditable 191st place from 363 finishers,” said Keith. “The physical injuries are well on the mend and I’m now focusing my sights firmly on the Edinburgh Marathon on May 27.”

Keith is running the Edinburgh Marathon to raise funds for Cancer Research UK in memory of his friend and fellow timber trader Steve Jones, who died of cancer in January. Keith has now raised £3,776 – well on the way to his £5,000 target.
