The European Commission (EC) has postponed a debate on whether to introduce legislation to outlaw the import of illegal timber into the EU.

It is the second postponement of the debate on legislative options to curb the flow of illegal tinber into Europe.

An EC spokesperson said the topic had been taken off the agenda of the September 10 meeting because there had already been too much for commissioners to debate. No new date has been forthcoming yet.

A legislative move to ban illegal timber is seen as an “additional option” to the EU’s Action Plan for Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade as a way of removing the competitive advantage of illegal products entering the European market.
