Russia’s prime minister Viktor Zubkov has called for the country’s timber industry to be completely overhauled.
In a report by Russian state news agency RIA Novosti, Mr Zubkov is quoted as saying at an industry meeting in the Vologda region that federal and regional authorities needed to co-ordinate with business to bring about change.
Mr Zubkov was also quoted as saying that it was “necessary” to work harder to attract foreign investment into the timber industry.
He also said there were more questions than answers following an earlier government meeting to discuss development of Russia’s timber industry. Mr Zubkov had expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that most of the country’s wood exports were roundwood rather than processed timber.
