Following its move to bigger premises to meet demand and improve access, workplace furniture maker WJ White has installed a range of new SCM technology.

Swindon-based White’s previous plant was near a residential area and had an awkward layout, which hampered production flow.

Its new 30,000ft² home provided the opportunity to readdress factory organisaton and machinery requirements.

“We had the opportunity to completely analyse production systems,” said works director Gerry Donaldson. “We also allowed floor space for new machinery to complement existing equipment and replace older technology.”

The first new SCM machine was a Mastersand 1350 DMC automatic calibrating wide-belt sander. This has two 320mm-diameter calibrating rollers, with 18.5kW two-speed motors each for maximum power.

The company also needed a new edge-bander to meet rising demand for MFC furniture, to complement the veneered products it has largely made to date.

White’s new machine is an SCM Stefani Solution HD single-sided edge bander which has variable feed speed of 12-25m/min and a pre-milling unit and can apply solid wood lippings up to 22mm.

The company also replaced its old SCM beam saw with a new Gabbiani Galaxy 3-110A, ordered with a 3200×3200 capacity to suit its particular board sizes.

Having had to sub-contract some panel cutting work because its exsting Morbidelli Author CNC machining centres did not have capacity, White has now also installed a Morbidelli Universal 3622, capable of all types of routiing and drilling on nested or individual panels. This and the other centres will soon be programmed with new Imos design software.
