Loneliness in the forest is the top reason why young forest machine operators leave their jobs, according to research undertaken by a Umeå University student.
Forestry student Emelie Bergqvist found that young drivers did not want to sit alone in a forest machine for days on end, particularly in the winter when there was little daylight.
Many young drivers quite after only one year, though it takes two years to become competent in the role.
The research found that older drivers usually left their jobs because of of “bad management”.
