King Charles had a close look at Accoya modified wood at the Chelsea Flower Show in mid-May, capping a positive period for the wood’s maker Accsys Technologies PLC.

An Accoya multi-purpose handrail was a standout feature in the Parkinson’s UK show garden at Cheslea this year, with the King getting a detailed look at the installation, manufactured by Millimetre UK.

The company also built a complex curved night shelter and benches from the material for the garden, called A Garden for Every Parkinson’s Journey.

The media attention follows encouraging provisional annual results for Accsys, showing record sales volumes for the full year ended March 31,2026. Its US business is growing strongly, while new partnerships in mainland Europe are also opening up opportunities.

Seven cubic metres of Accoya were donated by Accsys for the garden project.

Paul Jackson-Clark, director of Fundraising at Parkinson’s UK, told TTJ at the event that the Accoya handrail was a standout feature which helped take people on a visual journey through the garden.

The curved and laminated structure also carries running water, the sound of which will be important when it is relocated to Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital, a centre for research and treatment of Parkinson’s.

“The handrail is there to act as a balancing point and the water is an audible aid, because people with Parkinson’s are sometimes prone to ‘freezing’,” he said.

The sound of the water and the tactile nature of the wood helps people reset if they freeze, he added.

Accsys has invested heavily in manufacturing capacity and has the output to serve multiple growing markets.

Group annual revenue (unaudited) was up 12% to €153m (2025: €137m – actual), with a like-for-like change of +20%. The total record global sales volumes were 77,237m3 (including joint ventures) – up 21% from the 63,864m3 recorded in 2025.

Accsys said the performance demonstrated continued strong demand for Accoya amidst challenging macroeconomic conditions.
