The hardwood forms a scuptural feature in the Phoenix Brewery’s reception area, providing not only a decorative feature but also disguising an old staircase and housing the reception desk.
The timber form comprises a softwood carcase with a painted wooden board attached, to which are fixed 20x30cm tulipwood battens. The edges of battens have eben cut at angles to give a rippling effect.
The timber has been coloured a rich mid brown and treated to a Class 0 fire rating.
Andrew Trevillion, director of architect Stiff + Trevillion, said the tulipwood was ideal as it took a "good edge. "You can get a sharp arris on it," he said, adding that was vital to the sculpture’s success.
