The figures, released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), follow falls of 3% and 5.9% in construction sector output in the second quarter and first quarters respectively.
This means construction output has suffered an 11.4% reverse so far during 2012.
The ONS said the third quarter included one more working day than the previous period, though quantifying the effect of this was “not possible”.
But it said the Olympics and Paralympics did have an effect on GDP, with all games ticket sales being counted in the third quarter, increasing GDP by an estimated 0.2%.
The overall GDP growth follows three straight quarters of stagnation.
