Timber window manufacturer Mumford & Wood Ltd has cut its production costs and increased output by combining CNC machining technology with AlphaCAM design software.
Previously, the Colchester-based company used conventional production methods which meant making a window could take hours.
Its investment in the AlphaCAM software from Licom Systems and a CNC machining centre means the design and full machining of components takes a fraction of the time. It now makes nothing for stock.
Works manager David Snowling said the wide variety of windows did not cause any problems for the software. “We’re using the latest technology to produce a largely traditional, quality product – but at a very rapid rate”, he added.
The software is a fully parametric system so designs already available can be adapted for different sizes, which is seen as a key factor in providing replacement windows and new architect-specified products.
Design details can be downloaded directly onto the machining centre. AlphaCAM generates tool paths, tooling, feed speeds and creates the required CNC program.
Licom has added a facility for making curved tops for Mumford & Wood’s windows.
