The solution, devised by Weber Marking Systems of East Lothian, comprises the company’s FasTagger applicator together with its Legi label creation software and Weber polytags and ribbons.

“The most telling aspect of this new system is that if it was taken away in the morning there would be uproar – a sure sign of how it has made everyone’s life easier,” said general manager John Nugent.

The company supplies the Irish and UK markets with timber products for the construction, decking, timber frame, palletwood and fencing industries. As part of its supply agreement with DIY chain B&Q, every individual timber product has to include an EAN 13 barcode.

Before the Weber system was installed, pre-printed labels and a hand stapler were used to affix the labels. The company also had to carry a huge range of labels for the various lengths and cross sections of each product.

The FasTagger can apply more than 100 labels a minute, while the Legi label creation software enables the company to design its own barcode labels to individual customer requirements. The polytags resist fading and abrasion but are durable enough not to tear easily.

“Weber has provided a total solution that matches our precise requirements,” said Mr Nugent.
