Burbeary Joinery said it had been faced with the dual challenge of labour-intensive manufacturing methods and difficulties in recruiting skilled staff before installing a Biesse Rover 30 CNC machining centre and AlphaCAM’s alphastair CAD/CAM software.

Roger Burbeary, the company’s founder, said the equipment had fundamentally changed the business, delivering a 50% time saving over previous manufacturing methods.

He said: “Previously, most of our work was bespoke, hand crafted stairs costing several thousands of pounds each. Now we’re supplying builders with staircases that are typically called off in 15 sets at a time, all on a three week lead time.”

Mr Burbeary said the software removes the need for racks of jigs to suit different staircase styles.

The company uses alphastair, comprising staircad and staircam, for designing, costing and manufacturing stairs.
