Rounded timber frame pods for Devon County Council schools were creating a lot of interest on Allwood Buildings Ltd’s stand in the Timber Works section.
The spruce ply structures, designed by architect NPS Southwest, will be prefabricated, easy to transport and modular, so several structures can be fitted together. The first pods will go on site over the summer, ready for the new school year in September.
The pods are a new development for the company, which has been producing timber frame for 30 years. Using open panel systems and glulam, it has produced structures, up to six storeys, for housebuilders, housing associations, schools and theatres and, recently, the visitor centre for Castle Drogo, and it has shipped to sites from the Scilly Isles to Cyprus.
Allwood’s chairman, Terry Kingdon, said a lot of architects had visited the stand and were interested in working with Allwood and in the carbon footprint of timber structures.
