An artist whose work has hung in prominent galleries in New York and London is using the Hoffman dovetail jointing system to make his own picture frames.

Tony Roberts, who has exhibited at the New York Museum of Fine Art, started using the Hoffmann technique after a demonstration by John Galvin of Hoffman.

Mr Roberts said: ‘I was using a foot-operated underpinner, which never really gave satisfactory results, was problematical with hardwood frames and could not guarantee that the frames had not loosened after transporting.’

He said the system has saved time and space not having to deal with cramps and glue setting times. About 50 of his works are currently hanging at gallery 76 Portland Place.
