The efforts being made to develop sustainable forest management in Africa were outlined by ATIBT president Jean-Jacques Landrot to the French Academy of Agriculture recently.
He spoke about the technical complexity and the important environmental demands concerning forest management in tropical forests and detailed the priorities that need to be given to tropical foresters in order to achieve their objectives.
Priorities included employment, training, the environment and fair remuneration on investments.
Mr Landrot described certification which leans on demand for certified products without concern for uncertified products on offer as a “poorly adapted tool that can become counterproductive towards sustaainnable development”.
