A study by the Joint Venture Agroforestry Programme into the quality and uses of Australian-grown African mahogany was launched during a visit by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) board to Kununurra in Western Australia.
It found that African mahogany could yield as much as A$5.50 per m3 as it is used across a wide range of industries, including joinery, boat-building and furniture manufacturing.
“This research will assit all those involved in growing African mahogany to maximise the value of the timber, said RIRDC chairperson Mary Boydell.
Ms Boydell added that further research and development into Australia’s forestry sector and the issues related to it, such as disease and market conditions, would help underpin investments and developments in the industry.
