A Northern Ireland hardwood importer discriminated against a potential employee because of his age, an employment tribunal has heard.
Belfast-based James McGregor and Sons was taken before the tribunal by 58-year-old Terence McCoy.
Evidence submitted included age-related questions being asked in the sales job interview, as well as the newspaper advertisement indicating a young person was wanted.
The tribunal ruled that Mr McCoy would “more probably than not” have been selected for employment if it was not for his age.
“The tribunal determined that the company, and those involved in the recruitment, took account of Mr McCoy’s age as being a relevant factor in the selection process, and that this constituted unlawful discrimination,” the Equality Commission’s Eileen Lavery said after the case.
McGregors declined to comment.
