Wood for Good head of communications David Hopkins said that it was "very proud" to secure the backing of AHEC, widely regarded as one of the leading timber industry market development and promotion bodies worldwide.
"It highlights the importance of the UK as a hub for this truly global industry," said Mr Hopkins. "AHEC has led the way on many timber communications issues, especially life cycle analysis."
European director David Venables said AHEC would now work with Wood for Good to "help move our industry forward".
Looking at aspects of the campaign which aligned with AHEC’s activities and outlook, he mentioned its Timber Industry Manifesto, highlighting the key carbon and wider environmental benefits of using wood to decision makers, and its Wood First initiative to encourage local authorities to give timber and wood products preference in planning.
"Wood for Good has undergone major transformation over the past couple of years, leading the charge to establish timber’s place at the top table of construction and design," he said. "The publication of its Manifesto and the high-profile Wood First campaign have had real impact. Now its Wood First Plus project to gather a timber industry life cycle assessment (LCA) and Building Information Modelling database is building on this. It complements the work we have already done in this respect and will benefit the timber industry and specifiers alike."
He added that data from AHEC’s own LCA study of US hardwoods, commissioned from consultants PE International, would be fed into the Wood First Plus database.
Mr Hopkins said that the latter would contain all the information needed to promote timber and timber products as a "primary construction material".
He added there would be more opportunities ahead for collaboration with AHEC.
"We have a further programme of activity to drive the debate for sustainable timber," he said. "AHEC’s experience and input will be invaluable in pushing this forward."
