Kent-based Alsford Timber has invested around £500,000 in the creation of a new branch in East Sussex and the launch of a new business – “Fencing Direct”.
The company, which claims to be the largest independent timber merchant in the south-east, opened its 19th branch in Uckfield on February 2.
Under the management of Brendan Reeves, the new branch comprises 10,000ft2 of mainly covered storage plus a service mill and flooring centre.
Alsford Timber managing director John Griffiths said: “We have done extensive modifications to a building that existed on the site which we have leased. The addition of this branch fits comfortably into our network and allows us to service an area that has previously been unrepresented.”
And the new venture – Fencing Direct – opened at the end of January at Erith and is managed by Shaun Martin.

It is a trade business focused on supplying the fencing, landscaping, local authority, housebuilding and garden centre markets with fencing and associated products.
Mr Griffiths said: “This is something I have been considering for quite some time. There is an opportunity in the market place and it fits strategically with our core products. As a dedicated business it is designed to focus on this market sector and supply the contract fencing business.”
Most of material will be sourced in the Baltic states, and if the venture is successful more could be launched.
Mr Griffiths said: “The option to open more Fencing Direct outlets is available to us and we will review the situation after 18-24 months.”
