An investigation into the role of renewable energies such as biomass will form part of a series of inquiries into climate change policy launched by the House of Commons’ Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee.

The committee is now inviting written evidence submissions on a number of questions, including several on the subject of biofuels.

It wants to know how biomass and biofuels can contribute to tackling climate change, as well as what proportion of the UK’s energy needs they could provide.

Other questions include the potential impact of government and EU actions on growing demand and production of biomass and biofuels, plus the level of financial support necessary for bioenergy technologies to achieve the government’s renewable energy targets.

The inquiries will be held throughout 2006, with renewable energy the first theme to come under the microscope.

Gordon Brown’s recent Pre-Budget Report included measures to grow UK production and demand for biofuels, complementing the recommendations of the Biomass Taskforce.
