A timber warehouse at the Surbiton branch of Travis Perkins has been badly damaged following a fire on Thursday morning.

Around 50 firefighters and 10 fire appliances were called to a blaze at the King Charles Road branch, with about 50 nearby residents having to be evacuated to a church as a precaution because of smoke.

The fire badly damaged the two-storey building storing timber and sheet materials.

“Due to the timber inside the warehouse this was a rapidly developing fire but our crews worked hard to stop it from spreading and to bring it under control,” said station manager Glen Blah.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
