Nearly five miles of BCI joists are being supplied to a student accommodation development in Gloucester by Boise Cascade Europe.

I-joist spans of up to 10.7m are being used in the building, which is planned to take 130 students. The company is also supplying almost a mile of its Versa-Strand rim board to the project’s timber frame designers Allwood Timber.

A key part of the contract is guaranteed just-in-time delivery to the restricted access site using a non-curtain sided articulated vehicle.

The I-joists are being used at ground floor, first, second and third storey level, while the rim board is being used to transfer external wall loads and as a closure on top of wall panel edging.

Boise says use of I-joists at ground floor level is unusual but helps improve thermal performance and saves time because there is no waiting for screeding to dry.
