The takeover of the Aylesbury-based company by Bradford and Sons Ltd, follows the decision by Crendon Group chairman Keith Gibson to retire.

Crendon has a roof truss manufacturing business and supplies a wide range of engineered timber, including glulam and iLevel Trus Joist‘s full range of products, as well as timber frame. It operates from four main facilities – Aylesbury, Bristol, Piddlehinton (Dorset) and Castleford.

“The acquisition will strengthen our existing timber engineering and manufacturing businesses, providing an opportunity to expand our timber business geographically, offering the potential to gain a larger share of the market,” said Andrew Merriam, Bradford Group executive chairman.

“Having made the decision to retire and pursue other interests, I was anxious that the Crendon Group of companies became part of a larger organisation with the necessary resources to continue development of the business; and at the same time to safeguard the jobs of the employees,” said Crendon group chairman Keith Gibson.

Crendon, which also includes project management business Crendon Roofing Services Ltd, had sales of £19.82m and a operating profits of £1.07m in the year ended March 31, 2006.

Bradford and Sons Ltd, whose principal business is builders merchanting, has a turnover of £98m. Its timber importing, processing and engineering division is Glastonbury-based Snows Timber.
