Canfor has shelved logging in part of Alberta to allow the British Columbia provincial government time to complete a caribou protection plan.
The company’s decision to defer logging and road-building south of Grande Prairie for two years has been welcomed by environmental groups.
The area would have produced about 250,000m3 of timber over the next two years.
Weyerhaeuser decided last year to stop logging on more than 80,000ha of caribou habitat for five years.
