Groupe Decolvenaere, Pallisco and Transformation Reef Cameroun have agreed to sustainably manage up to 700,000ha of natural forest in the Congo Basin.
The companies have committed to responsible forest management and obtaining Forest Stewardship Council certification for their operations.
Meanwhile, Ghana’s Forestry Commission is cracking down on illegal teak operations in forest reserves.
The commission has expanded its monitoring activities and is confiscating teak billets. About 1,200 teak billets have been impounded so far at the forestry services division’s Berekum district office.
About 10 uncertified mobile sawmills have been identified in the Tein II and Paamu/ Berekum reserves.
